English for Academic Purposes (ES1101)


This is a 48-hour English proficiency course for Architecture, Building and Industrial Design students. Tutorials begin in Week 2 of each semester.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students:

should be able to read critically and analytically a given text, identify points to counter-argue and/or give their own ideas and opinions.

should become aware and put into practice the need to write coherently, cohesively, clearly and correctly.

should be able to identify language errors in a given text quite accurately, if not fully, and attempt to correct these as accurately as possible to the given word/s in the original text.

would be able to participate orally in group discussion and learn over the assigned tasks.


Content

The course addresses three main areas: common grammar problems; writing principles, reading and oral presentation skills. Each student will also participate in the teaching of the class. Students receive feedback on their work from both their peers and their tutors during conferencing.

Course requirement

Three reading exercises
Three writing assignments
Two conferences with the tutor
One oral presentation
Regular grammar practice
Participation in group and online work

Assessment

Class work throughout the semester accounts for 60% of the grade while the final examination makes up the remaining 40%.

Professional Communication (ES2007D)


Objectives

This course has been designed to develop :

an understanding of basic communication theories, intercultural communication, group dynamics, critical thinking, the role of peer review and teamwork;
mastery of concepts and skills involved in written and oral communication;
skills in designing and writing in a variety of genres that reaches and moves an audience; and
ability to investigate, analyse, evaluate, respond to and influence ideas, beliefs, and attitudes of others.


Format

The course comprises, essentially, three main components:

Fundamentals of Communication
Written Communication
Oral Communication

Lectures will be complemented by tutorials, group discussions, peer reviews, web-based activities and lecturer-student conferences.

Assessment

A combination of group and individual assignments will be set. Evaluation is based on continual assessment and a final examination.

Attendance

Attendance at tutorials is compulsory.
