ES1000 - Basic English Course

This is a required course for students whose Qualifying English Test results show that they need help with basic English language skills. Students must pass this course before they are allowed to read the next required English course, English for Academic Purposes. The purpose of ES1000 is to improve the students’ English language skills. The course focuses on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Relevant grammar points are taught, reviewed, and reinforced through appropriate activities. Assignments include an oral presentation and at least four written tasks.


Objectives

The purpose of ES1000 is to help the students improve in their English skills. By the end of the course, the students will

  • Understand and use basic English grammar correctly
  • Be able to write coherent paragraphs
  • Be able to identify and correct a limited set of grammar errors in written texts
  • Have an improved academic vocabulary
  • Be aware of collocations, collect and use them in writing
  • Be able to read with greater understanding
  • Have improved their listening and speaking ability
  • Developed some independent learning skills for further language learning

Assessment

This is a 100% CA module:

50% of CA will be go to the following assignments:

  • Assignment 1 Paragraph 1 (10%)
  • Assignment 2 Oral Presentation (10%)
  • Assignment 4 A Comparison - Contrast Paragraph (15%)
  • Assignment 5 A Cause and Effect Paragraph (15%)

30% of CA is given on the basis of performance in three progress tests (grammar, reading and writing).

  • Progress 1: 5%
  • Progress 2: 10%
  • Progress 3: 15%

20% of CA is given on work done for the SELF Study Portfolio, independent learning and class participation:

  • SELF Study Portfolio and E-Learning
  • Attendance, punctuality and attitude
