Learning & Development

The University is committed to providing an environment conducive to the continued growth and development of faculty and staff members.

The following learning and development opportunities are available:

  • In-house Training Programmes
  • External Courses and Professional Development
  • Scholarships, Fellowships and Other Programmes

Bullet In-house Training Programmes

The Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning provides a wide range of training programs for faculty members. These include the Continuing Professional Development Programme, which helps faculty members upgrade their professional skills, as well as workshops/seminars that encourage innovation and the application of information technology to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

The Office of Human Resources plans and organises a wide range of in-house courses for staff members in competency areas such as leadership & management, analytical thinking, customer focus, teamwork, communication, personal effectiveness and information technology. A process is in place for the development of staff’s competencies based on performance expectations.

Bullet External Courses and Professional Development

Staff members may be sponsored to attend external programmes, locally or overseas. They may seek professional development through participation at conferences, seminars, workshops, research meetings, study and field trips, as well as attachments to overseas research laboratories and renowned academic institutions.

In addition, the University also provides full subsidy or heavy discounts on fees payable by staff members enrolled in part-time NUS graduate degree programmes. NUS staff members also enjoy discounts on short courses offered by NUS Extension.

Bullet Scholarships, Fellowships and Other Programmes

Development opportunities for academic staff members are also available through internal scholarship/fellowship programmes (e.g. NUS-Overseas Graduate Scholarship and NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship), as well as external programmes nominated through NUS (e.g. Hitachi Scholarship and Hitachi Research Fellowship). Nominations for such programmes are usually open once a year.

In particular, the NUS-Overseas Graduate Scholarship and NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme are part of the University’s continuing effort to nurture high calibre young Singaporeans/Singapore Permanent Residents for a career in academia on the tenure-track. Awards are given out on the merits of each case.
