Yale-NUS College, a new and highly selective residential liberal arts college being developed by Yale University and the National University of Singapore, located in Singapore, invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Educational Resources & Technology.

Yale-NUS College will open its doors in 2013, and will become home to 1,000 students and approximately 100 faculty.  As one of a very few fully residential liberal arts institutions in Asia, and the only one expressly dedicated to exploring a fusion of Asian and Western intellectual traditions, the College offers an inspiring opportunity to participate directly in curricular and pedagogical innovations on a broad scale.

Job Description

The Dean will manage an office coordinating administrative teams tasked with overseeing three essential academic and instructional support service units of the College - the library, multimedia center, and multidisciplinary arts (which include music, dance, theater, studio arts, etc.)  The Dean will work closely with the College faculty to explore the curricular, pedagogical and technological innovations possible when combining the best qualities of a traditional liberal arts education with more global content, supported by the active participation of two dynamic universities, with a campus designed from the outset to support these efforts.  The Dean will report to the Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs.

The College embraces a complex curriculum that reaches across a variety of disciplines and introduces a range of global perspectives, encourages active student participation in their education through small discussion-based classes and research projects conducted with classmates and faculty mentors, offers extensive opportunities to learn and work via internships/research/employment away from the campus, and promotes a vigorous residential-based co-curricular life.  The Dean provides strategic and intellectual leadership in support of these educational priorities, keeping abreast of ways in which to take advantage of advances in resource technology as well as multidisciplinary arts.

The Dean will promote an engaged, proactive style of service in all three academic support units that will contribute to the College's living and learning environment.  The Dean will focus on providing a robust and supportive environment for the exploration, development and application of educational resources that include the arts and technology for teaching and learning.  S/he will appoint and work with senior administrators of the three units to fulfill their requirements:

  1. The library focuses on the administration and provision of print and electronic resources to meet the demands of pedagogical and scholarly endeavors.  The library staff will collaborate with faculty to build collections for teaching and research needs.  The library will develop programs to educate students on effective access of information.

  2. The multimedia centre will facilitate and support campus-wide IT resources, as well as provide a robust and supportive environment for the exploration, development and application of digital technologies for teaching and learning.  It will provide consulting and training on: the use of technology in teaching and learning; use and design of multimedia services for faculty and students; special academic technology as necessary for faculty; supporting student uses of technology for academic, social, and community-building purposes including networking support, online consulting and educational programs, computer clusters and multimedia equipment, and printing and software systems.

  3. The multidisciplinary arts unit will focus on managing all facets of arts and culture in the College, including the visual and performing arts facilities.  It will seek to contribute to a holistic education at the College and to enhance students' academic, co- and extra-curricular experiences through the arts.  These will include but are not limited to equipping and maintaining arts spaces and its associated technical equipment, managing arts-related schedules of students, faculty and visitors and engaging with faculty and students to develop co-curricular and extra-curricular arts programs.
