Keeping the NUS spirit ablaze - By Chen Mingli
Keeping the NUS spirit ablaze

By Chen Mingli - Chemical Engineering graduate 2008

I have always been amazed by how such colorful and beautiful creations could be products of scrap materials ranging from the usual recycled tin cans and cardboards, even to tangerine peels or rambutan shells, the choice of raw materials is only limited by the imagination. To me, it is truly a feat for the participating bodies to conceptualize and put into reality their ideas.

Tired? The race goes on

By Jarrod Tan Cheng Hean - (ME4)

Mechanical components suffer from fatigue, and cracks start developing in the front hub after several runs. This is just one of the many lessons I have learnt at the Mechanical Engineering Department, helping to put the 2008 FSAE car together. Once cracks appear at the race track, it would be too late to fix them. So, we have to come out with alternative designs to prevent them happening in the first place.

I glanced down at the three thick textbooks I bought, wondering how I will lug them around the entire day without a plastic bag. Before I could say anything to the cashier, Mugant dropped 10 cents into the box. “It’s only 10 cents.

A Walk To Remember...

By Hong Choon Chiet - Eusoff Hall resident, 4th-year, Medicine

It is a difficult task to pen one’s thoughts about life and even more so for the lamentably short years one spends in NUS. For medical students such as myself, life in NUS seems to revolve around endless medical postings to hospitals and exams after each posting. Life can be a little bleak for us medical types but as soon as I find myself descending into self-pity.

8:30pm on the 28th of March 2009 is most probably the only hour in our annual calendar when being a 'turn off' is accepted as an ethical superior than being a 'turn on'. NUS had its inaugural candlelight Earth Hour event on the 28th of March 2009, a beginning of a tradition I hope will never end.
