How You Can Help

If you have any of the flu-like symptoms below:

  • fever
  • body aches
  • sore throat
  • cough
  • runny nose

AND

  • have travelled to a bird flu-affected area within 2 weeks of onset of the symptoms; or
  • are a close contact of persons diagnosed with bird flu. (Close contact means having cared for, having lived with, or having had direct contact with respiratory secretions and body fluids of a person with bird flu)

please seek medical attention early at the University Health, Wellness and Counselling Centre (tel: 6516 2880 or 6516 2390 ).

 

Good Hygiene Practices – Individual and Civic Responsibility

In light of a possible global flu pandemic, we would like to remind staff and students the importance of adopting good hygiene practices as an effective way to prevent the spread of germs. Staff and students are encouraged to adopt the following good hygiene practices:

  • Do not spit on the floor or ground.
  • Wash the entire hand (video content; file size: 12.5MB) frequently with soap and water, especially
    • Before and after preparing food
    • After going to the toilet
    • Before and after eating
    • After blowing your nose
    • After coughing or sneezing on them.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with tissue when sneezing or coughing.  Tissues should be used to wipe secretions from the nose.  Use tissues instead of handkerchiefs so that they can be thrown away.  Discard the tissues in a waste basket.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, nose or mouth as germs are often spread this way.
  • Avoid sharing personal items (e.g. cutlery, cups).
  • If you are well, avoid close contact with people who have flu.  On the other hand, if you are sick, you should keep a distance from others.  You are also encouraged to stay at home and rest in bed.  In high risk places, (e.g. the doctor’s waiting room) a surgical mask can be worn to cover the face (video content; file size: 24.3MB).
  • Ventilate enclosed areas periodically to get rid of germs in the air. 
  • Try to keep the immune system functioning in peak form by
    • Getting good nutrition
    • Drinking more water
    • Having adequate sleep
    • Stopping from smoking
    • Limiting alcohol intake
    • Continuing a moderate exercise programme consistently
    • Resting. Listen to your body – if you are feeling unwell, you will recover faster if you let yourself rest.
