BREAKING THE GENETIC CODE

As a statistical geneticist, Assoc Prof Teo Yik Ying (Faculty of Science/Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine) has developed novel and important methodological solutions that traversed the challenges of charting the genetics and genomics of complex human traits as well as common and infectious diseases. He received the Singapore Youth Award 2011 for his trailblazing contributions in the fields of science and technology, one of which included the Singapore Genome Variation Project. This comprehensive research explores the genome landscape of Singapore's three main ethnic groups – Chinese, Malay and India – which would help shed some light on their susceptibility to diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

GATEKEEPER GENE UNCOVERED

Led by world-renowned molecular oncologist Prof Yoshiaki Ito (Cancer Science Institute of Singapore), researchers have identified the RUNX3 gene as a major tumour suppressor of gastric and colon cancers. As the gatekeeper of these cancers, uncovering what RUNX3 guards will hold the key to preventing the development of cancer. The team's findings will therefore help to develop an early diagnostic test for the disease and find a cure for the illness.
