PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It has been an exhilarating year for NUS. We have continued our excellent trajectory of progress towards our vision of becoming a leading global university centred in Asia. As in the past, we have placed a singular focus on nurturing and recruiting faculty who are among the leaders in their fields, and last year has been particularly fruitful in this regard. New programmes to develop our administrative staff were also successfully launched. Student quality has continued to rise and our engagement with our alumni has further deepened.

NUS’ education is defined by its rigour and differentiated by its distinctive global programmes. Over the past year, we have continued to re-shape the curricula in several Schools including Engineering, Medicine, Business and Computing, to position them strongly for the future. Our students are also able to leverage on our strong linkages with top foreign universities to do joint and double degree programmes, while the more entrepreneurially inclined ones spend a year at our Overseas Colleges located in the major entrepreneurial hubs of Silicon Valley, Bio Valley, Stockholm, Beijing, Shanghai and Bangalore.

On the teaching front, the NUS Teaching Academy was established to tap on the very best teachers in our University to help drive NUS’ education to new heights of excellence. I envision that the Teaching Academy will inspire and nurture future generations of outstanding educators and drive quality and innovation in our education.

Research in NUS is flourishing, in scope, scale, quality and impact. We have continued to make excellent progress in developing our integrative research clusters – in Finance and Risk Management; Ageing; Biomedical Sciences and Sustainability, as well as the Asia-related and cross-cluster programmes in the new Global Asia Institute. The aim is to create powerful new synergies among the deep pools of research talent in NUS to give our University a strong competitive edge, and to provide new and distinctive value to Singapore as a significant player in a rising Asia.

Today NUS thrives as a dynamic university, characterised by a strong sense of self-belief and forward movement. We have been ranked as one of the top three universities in Asia and among the leading institutions in the world. Our University’s success is a reflection and result of the quality and creativity of the NUS community. As we continue to pursue our strategic goals with passion and resolve, I look forward to working with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, benefactors and partners to take NUS to new heights of excellence.

TAN Chorh Chuan
President
