| Time out at Munchie Monkey |
In true entrepreneurial spirit, NUS Students’
Union (NUSSU) embarked on their first business
venture with the set up of a food and beverage
outlet at Yusof Ishak House, the hub of student
life on campus. Called Munchie Monkey, the
café is a joint venture with food operator,
Spageddies, and is the first student-managed
food outlet in Singapore’s tertiary institutions.
Earnings from the outlet are channelled towards
funding student activities.

His Majesty, King Harald V of Norway, witnessed
the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) between NUS President Professor Shih
Choon Fong and the Rector of the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology (NTNU),
Professor Eivind Hiis Hauge. The new agreement
charts the next phase of the two universities’
collaboration in areas such as maritime and
offshore technology in oil and gas, energy,
logistics, materials engineering, geohazards
and nanotechnology.

| MOU Signing - TLI–AP and Georgia Tech |
NUS and the Georgia Institute of Technology
(Georgia Tech) signed an MOU to kick off the
second phase of their collaboration in The
Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific (TLI-AP). The new
five-year partnership will see the development
of an even closer-knit relationship between the
two universities as together they foster more industry-relevant education and research in
areas such as Radio Frequency Identification.
NUS entered into a new Maritime and Port
Research Programme when it signed an
MOU with the Maritime and Port Authority of
Singapore. The new agreement sets out the
framework for the establishment of researchbased
Maritime Technology Professorships, a
maritime industrial attachment programme for
NUS students and joint research initiatives.

| Celebrating Prof Shih’s entry into NAE |
NUS President Professor Shih Choon Fong
was formally received into the prestigious US
National Academy of Engineering (NAE) as
the only Singaporean among its 168 foreign
associates. In welcoming Prof Shih to the august
body, the citation noted his achievements in
the “development of innovative computational
methods in non-linear fracture mechanics and
for international leadership in engineering”.
Prof Shih’s membership also makes him the
first Singaporean to be a member of the US
National Academies, which is made up of the
National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of
Medicine, the National Research Council and
the NAE.
