The University's campus-wide optical fibre network, NUSNET, was officially launched on 11 April. Equipped with the largest state-of-the-art campus network in the Asia Pacific region and plugged into a world network of about 3,000 academic and research institutions through Internet, the system greatly enhanced the University's research productivity.
NUS Library took a historic step into the future on 1 October when its online public access catalogue known as LINC (Library Integrated Catalogue) was made available to the University community 24 hours a day via NUSNET.
The Universities Endowment Fund was launched to institutionalise public and alumni support for university education in Singapore. The secretariat was based at the University with the Director of the Alumni Affairs and Development Office serving as campaign director.
