Graduate Degree by Research

INTRODUCTION

In line with the Faculty's mission "to be a leading international institution in teaching, research and clinical care", the Faculty is stepping up its effort to develop excellence in this area.

Surrounded by a wealth of facilities and personnel from related faculties (Faculty of Engineering and Medicine) and institutes (BIOMAT and NUMI), the Faculty is well poised to provide degrees in MSc, PhD and DDS in the following departments:-

  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Preventive Dentistry
  • Restorative Dentistry

Being a small Faculty, we are highly selective in admitting candidates with suitable qualifications.

Period of candidature:

MSc Minimum 1 year Maximum 3 years
PhD Minimum 2 years Maximum 5 years
DDS Minimum 2 years Maximum 5 years

Research candidates may be admitted as full-time or part-time students. However, foreign students on student pass must pursue their study on a full-time basis. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for both full-time and part-time programme are the same.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR FULL-TIME CANDIDATES

The University offers financial assistance to full-time graduate research students through its Research Scholarships, which are awarded to outstanding graduates for research leading to a higher degree at the University. The Scholarships are tenable for 1 year in the first instance and are renewable annually, subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarship for Master's is 2 years and for PhD 3 years.

Each Scholarship carries a monthly stipend of S$1,500 and a fee subsidy. No travel or other allowances are provided.

Research scholars are required to render a nominal 6 hours of work per week without remuneration. The work rendered will be in the nature of research done by the research scholar for the supervisors. Please note that the University does not guarantee employment to research scholars upon completion of their candidature.


ADMISSION TO MSc or PhD

  1. There are two intakes per academic year: one in July and the other in January. To apply, please download and send your application forms (PDF file) to:

  2. All students except local and internationally accredited DDS and MBBS are admitted into the Master's programme initially. They may be upgraded to PhD within 1 to 1½ years after taking the qualifying exam.

    Local or internationally accredited BDS and MBBS may be admitted directly into the PhD programme on the recommendation of the Department. Candidate being thus admitted is required to take the PhD qualifying exam within 18 months from the registration date. The candidate must be a graduate of at least three years standing.

  3. The medium of instruction is English. All applicants except those who have a degree (either Bachelor's or higher) from universities in Singapore, USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines should submit TOFEL/TWE scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English Language.

    Minimum score:

    • TOEFL Score - 580 for paper based total and 237 for paper based total
    • TWE - 4 (exceptions may be made at the discretion of FGC)
    • IELTS - 6 and above
    • Interviews could be carried out if deemed necessary or may be waived at the discretion of the Faculty.

COURSES REQUIRED

Both MSc and PhD Candidates are required to take two compulsory courses ie. Biostatistics and Research Methodolody. In addition, PhD candidates are required to take two elective courses relevant to their research areas.

THESIS AND EXAMINATIONS

  1. Master’s

    Written thesis to be examined by at least 2 internal examiners (within the Faculty or University)

  2. PhD

    1. Thesis Committee

      • Formed within 6 months of student’s registration.
      • Minimum of 3 members (supervisor and 2 other members)
      • Committee is responsible for monitoring students’ progress and completing progress reports.

       

    2. Qualifying Examination

      Candidates are required to take the qualifying examination latest at the end of 18 months of their candidature.

      1. Examination

        • written proposal and oral viva
        • presentation of protocol

         

      2. Process of nomination of examiners

        • Supervisor should inform the Head of Department when the candidate is ready for the qualifying examination. The examination should be carried out latest at the end of 18 months of the candidature.

        • Head of Department should submit proposed examiners to Faculty’s Vice Dean of Research for approval, through Dean’s Office at least one month before student is expected to present his protocol so as to avoid delay in the examination process.

        • Number of examiners required:

          At least 3 examiners (Vice Dean of Research or representative, and 2 members in the related field of research)

        • Examiners would be notified by the Dean’s Office upon approval by the Vice Dean of Research.

        • Supervisor is not eligible to be examiner.

        • To ensure total impartiality in the examination of the thesis, the proposed examiners should have no conflict of interests. For example, a proposed examiner should not be the candidate’s research collaborator or co-author of publications.

         

    3. Progress Report on Research Scholars

      Progress report to be submitted using Form 823/93A. This report is to be completed by the Thesis Committee. Registrar’s Office will send the pre-printed forms to the Dean’s Office for distribution to the supervisors.

    4. Nomination of Examiners for Thesis

      Nomination of examiners to be submitted using Form 128/97B, which can be obtained from the Dean's Office.

    5. Oral Examination

      The panel for the examination will comprise of the following:

      • Dean, Faculty of Dentistry (as Chairman) and/or Vice Dean, Division of Research and Graduate Studies or representative
      • Head of Department of candidate or representative
      • 1-2 persons in the related field of candidates’ research, one of which must be outside the Faculty

       

    6. Examination of Thesis

      1. Written thesis examined by an internal/university examiner and two external examiners
      2. Public presentation to peers
      3. Oral Examination Panel

        • Dean, Faculty of Dentistry (as Chairman) and/or Vice Dean, Division of Research and Graduate Studies or representative
        • Head of Department of candidate or representative
        • 1-2 persons in the related field of candidates’ research, one of which must be outside the Faculty

         

      Preferably members of the OEP should themselves have a PhD.

FEES PAYABLE

Please pay the application fee of Singapore Dollar $52.00 (4% Goods & Service Tax inclusive). Payment is to be made in favour of "National University of Singapore." (payable together with the submission of application form and application documents)

Registration fee - $51.50 (payable once on admission)

Research fees for MSc, PhD and DDS

  • S$ 5 200* per year for Singapore citizens and SPRs
  • S$ 5 700* per year for foreign students
    (for January 2003 intake)

(Please take note that the Research fees will varies every academic year)

The above research fees would be fully subsidized for candidates on Research Scholarships.
