Professor Khoo Hoon Eng graduated in the USA and went on to obtain a PhD from St. Mary’s Medical School in London. After 11 years teaching at the National University of Malaysia as well as serving on several government and professional committees drafting regulations and organising training courses, she joined NUS Medical School. Here she was Vice Dean for several years before becoming an Associate Professor in Biochemistry and Deputy Head of the Medical Education Unit. Professor Khoo is a strong believer in ongoing development, and to this end, she is also an Associate Director for the Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning (CDTL) for staff development. She is always ahead of her time, leading causes which she feels strongly, for example, she was a founder member of the Friends of the Earth, a Malaysian environment group in the late 1970’s and in the 1980’s, the All-Women’s Action Society Malaysia) which is still active in advocacy work for disadvantaged women.Yet she still finds time to write, and has published books in the life sciences, research and education.
Today, she leads the Singaporean women’s advocacy group AWARE (Association of Women for Action and Research) and volunteers in Action for AIDS. Her personal journey has led her to co-found a support group called SAFE (Supporting, Affirming and Empowering our LGBT friends and family). |
